Downtown LA
Looking for a new spot in downtown LA, I stumbled across a Brazilian eatery on my Urban Spoon app. Its not too often you come across Brazilian restaurants in So Cal unless you go looking for them. On that note, its not too often you go looking for a restaurant you have directions to and can’t find it. The Wood Spoon is small, it doesn’t have much signing, and its on a dark side of 9th street so if you go, keep your eyes open!
So to start, Wood Spoon is…well, the size of a Wood Spoon. I mean we are talking limited space! I went during a busy hour and sat about 1 foot away from the tables to my left and right. In fact, I decided to text my girlfriend the whole dinner so that I didn’t share my day with the Chinese girl to my left. And yes I have a girlfriend Roy and I are not gay. The point is, the place is small, its painted all yellow, and its furnished like an elementary school lunch room. On to the food.
Wow factor: The Cinnamon Water
I read that their chicken pot pie is their signature dish but I definitely didn’t want chicken pot pie…sounded too wet and creamy. We Started with the Pastel Portuguese a dumpling appetizer filled with shrimp that you dip in coconut sauce. The waitress claimed it to be her favorite. Personally, I thought it was wet and mushy and bland and I was over it. NO THANK YOU, NEXT. Pork Burger with roasted cabbage & onions on toasted potato bread. Yum. The meat was excellent but the sandwich itself needed mustard and I’m not sure it was worth the 12 bucks. Honestly the best thing at Wood Spoon is the water and that’s no slap in the face comment. Ice cold water is served in a jar for you to pour yourself with a fresh cinnamon stick floating on the bottom. Cinnamon water… Its quite tasty. At the end of the day, I don’t know Wood Spoon…I think I’m over you.
